Thesis Abstract FormName of the Student : Ahu SOYLUProgram of Study : Industrial EngineeringThesis Title : Modeling and Analysis of Energy Production Systemsfor Environmentally Conscious Supply Chain ManagementAbstractThe energy sector is a high-cost and high-emission sector. With the demandingenvironmental regulations, the energy producing companies must find new solutionscontinuously to decrease emissions while satisfying the energy demand. It was shownthat collaboration by exchanging steam among the companies may create synergy both inenvironmental and economical criteria. In this thesis, the analysis of the synergy createdby collaboration is examined in detail; the conditions that can create synergy and thebehavior of synergy under specific cases are examined. Moreover, optimization modelsthat resemble real characteristics of cogeneration systems are developed. Cogenerationsystems include boilers that are crucial equipments in the sense they incur most of theoperating costs and harmful gas emissions. Therefore, performance maintenance ofboilers is an important aspect in the management of energy systems. A modelingtechnique is developed for performance maintenance with two approaches. Then, theoptimization model is extended to reflect the contradicting multi-objective nature of theenergy systems: minimize the total cost and minimize the emissions of environmentallyharmful gases. The incentives of companies under the economy - environmentcontradiction are examined. This contradiction requires making new technologyinvestments to reduce emissions to desired levels. Therefore, a model for planning thetransition to new technologies has been developed for the energy production system. It isfound on the example system that, in addition to collaboration, companies must makeinvestments in new technologies in order to achieve the required emission reductions inthe long run.Advisors: Assist.
