Abstract (EN)

The main objective of this study is to investigate the educational challenges of Syrian students in the Turkish education system and develop some recommendations for their future education. In order to gain a better perspective, a literature review on migration, integration, refugee education, and the educational challenges of Syrian students has been conducted. A qualitative research method has been employed to comprehend the challenges of Syrian students in the school environment. To collect data, semi-structured interviews with 15 teachers in different regions of Ankara in 6 public schools have been made. As a result of the findings of the study, it has become evident that Syrian students have been facing several challenges in the Turkish education system in public schools. These challenges have been categorized under two headings. Challenges within the School Environment are the language barrier, discrimination, teachers' competence, and school adaptation. Out of School Factors are the digital divide, socio-economic barriers, parent-school relationship, and cultural differences. Therefore, sustainable and effective policies should be implemented to ensure the integration of Syrian children into the education system and society. The steps to be taken in the future will not only contribute to the lives of Syrian students, but will also have great importance for the prosperity of Turkey.
