Non-Muslims in Diyarbekir province according to jizye books (1691-1695)

Muslim non-Muslim relations, which started from the time of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.v.), continued over time. Some practices were taken to protect the security of life and property of non-Muslims who remained under the sovereignty of Muslim states. One of these practices, the jizya tax, was a type of tax levied only on non-Muslims. The jizya tax, which was also known as the tribute tax in time, was not levied on everyone, nor was it levied on everyone in the same amount. It was categorized as rich, middle and poor according to the income of the people. However, after some reforms made after 1691, there were changes in the amount of jizya levied.In the province of Diyarbekir, which came under Ottoman rule in the 16th century, the administration of the province was administratively left to the tribal elders through the yurtluk-okaklık system. The newly created province of Diyarbekir was appointed as beylerbey of the province byıyıklı Mehmed Pasha. Until the XIXth century, most of the sanjaks of Diyarbekir were administered under this system.In the Ottoman Empire, society was divided according to the millet system.
