Values education in Ülker Köksal's novels in terms of children's literature

The main objective of this study has been to analyse Ülker Köksal's novels in terms of values education. In the first part of the research, a conceptual framework has been set related to description of value, values education approaches, values education in Turkish National Education System, values education in Turkish lessons, the role of literature in transmitting values, the characteristics of novel, the life of Ülker Köksal, and his literary character. In this framework, the correlation of these concepts with one another has been detected. A descriptive scanning method has been used in the study. The scope of the study includes eight novels of the writer which were published between 1995-2007. Taking into consideration the researches related to the values education, twenty-five values have been defined. Each of the novels was scanned in the scope of these values. Tha data gained at the end of the scannig was written down. The values were defined as seperate titles. How the values were handled have been found out by means of quotations from novels and have been come to conclusions. In the works examined, it has been found out that the value of "love" takes part most. Cooperation, friendship, helpfulness follow love. Any values concerning being virtuous have not been encountered in the novels. The least common values in the novels are successively patriotism, tolerance, paying attention to being healthy, being modest. No messages constituting negative examples in terms of values education have been encountered in the novels. Keywords: Value, Values Education, Ülker Köksal, Novel, Edeucation of Turkish
