Abstract (EN)

viiABSTRACTA MODAL STUDY OF ESK ŞEH R ONGEOGRAPHY AND COMMUNICATION RELATIONSSinan GÜVENGeography DepartmentAfyon Kocatepe University, The Institute of Social SciencesJune 2006Advisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Tevfik ERKALEskişehir centre is on a flat surface which curves from the slopes of the southernhills to the Porsuk valley in the North and the Porsuk river divides the city into two parts. The city was built on a plain 800 m. above the sea level. The fault zone in the city centre which is in West-North-West and East-South-Eastdirection was formed during the neotectonic period. The local ground conditions areimportant because of the destruction caused by the earthquakes. The possible destruction isa great risk of uncontrolled power for the high voltage electric lines, GSM base transceiverand other buildings.Communication is done in atmospheric conditions. Weather conditions and climateare branches of geography which affects communication. As well as relief forms; trees, forests and vegetation might cause problems in communication. The inclination is less than5 degrees in the city centre where the population is high in Eskişehir. Since the relief formsare not homogenous in the city centre, the radio frequencies are scattered and specularreflections are formed. The reflecting areas which disturb communication are caused by thegeographical features. The increase in educated population and people who can use communicationsystems effectively in Eskişehir caused a decrease in agricultural population and increasedthe number of people who work in scientific and technical fields considerably. The fast spread of communication technologies which serve humanity brought theenvironmental problems itself. Increasing number of base stations in the field of study (seemap) establishes an example .Today, Eskişehir shows the characteristics of a fast growing, fast developing city, which is exposed to severe electromagnetic pollution.
