Retrospective evaluation of thyroid hormone changes in the acute period in COVİD-19 patients

The Covid-19 pandemic emerged in Wuhan, China on December 1, 2019, became a pandemic after a certain period of time and affected the whole world economically, health, etc. it has been a health problem affecting many areas. The virus, which affects millions, has caused and continues to cause mortality and morbidity of millions. Thyroid hormone dysfunction is a common condition in society. Various reasons cause hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. These can be summarized as autoimmune causes, viral causes, bacterial causes, inflammatory processes, drugs, nodules. The aim of our study was to detect thyroid hormone changes in people with Covid-19 disease and to establish the relationship between Covid-19 and thyroid hormone panels. According to our hypothesis, thyroid functions may change depending on Covid-19. This study included 180 patients, including 93 females and 87 males, who were hospitalized in Covid-19 Service-1 and Covid-19 Service-2, which were diagnosed with Covid-19 positivity by PCR examination in the swab sample in the microbiology laboratory of the Inonu University Turgut Ozal Medical Center. Patients with positive Covid-19 and TSH, free T3 (fT3), free T4 (fT4), peroxidase antithyroid antibody (Anti-TPO), anti-TSH, and ATG studied were included in this study. The findings of this study show that age, TSH and fT3 were statistically significantly different between the patients who should be followed up in the intensive care unit and the patients followed in the ward in the clinical course of the patients included in the study. According to our results, we think that Covid-19 disease cause thyroid dysfunction by affecting thyroid hormones. We think that Covid-19 may cause destruction of the thyroid gland by causing viral thyroiditis, may change the hormonal panel by triggering autoimmune mechanisms, and the high inflammatory process during the disease may affect thyroid functions. More studies are needed to have clearer information about the relationship between Covid-19 disease and the thyroid hormone panel. Keywords: Covid-19, TFT, Thyroiditis.
