Abstract (EN)

Independent Cinema is a practice that has arisen globally as an alternative to the dynamics of mainstream cinema, and its qualities differ by country. This form of cinema, which developed differently in America and Europe where the concept of independent film emerged first, also had an impact on independent filmmaking in Turkey. These activities, which were limited to a few filmmakers and genres during the Yeşilcam period, grew qualitatively and quantitatively after the 1990s due to the foreign distributor law and the advent of Eurimages fund. Inspired by the Art - house style, it attempted to develop a narrative and aesthetic distinct from mainstream film. This dissertation, which examines the independent films of Contemporary Turkish Cinema, attempted to define and classify its defining characteristics. Using prior research on this topic as a foundation, it is intended to create a new, more comprehensive critique of the films. According to the findings of the thesis, Turkish Independent Cinema has developed an uninstitutionalized discourse, and it has been determined that this language has three common themes: alienation, nostalgia, and realism.
