Pica prevalence in patients with iron deficiency anemia and relationship between pica and anemia symptoms

Most frequent reasonis in sufficent intake. Alopecia, fatigue and fragility of nails are among important symptoms.From the oncient times, pica which means excessive desire of eating objects thatshouldn?t be eaten, defines as a eating disorder in psychologic. In previous reseachs, the typesof pica are; ice, ice-cream, soil, orgil, mud, tomatoes, rice, aspirin, coke.The aim in this research is to find the frequency of pica in patients with iron deficiencyanemia and association with the anemia symptoms in Turkey.The research consists of 100 female patients diagnosed as iron deficiency anemia inFatih University Hospital in Ankara. With data: name, surname, age, anemia symptomps andlaboratory results are evaluated. All the group data are used for Standard deviation, descriptiveidentified statistics, percentil distribution and general mean. P values < 0,05 are defired assignificant.100 iron deficiency patients were studied in the research. All the research patientsselected as female. Male patients were excluded from the research. İn the research grouppatıents; thr most seen symptoms were fatigue (%97), alopecia (%66), dispeptic symptomps(%65), heart palpitation (%55), lost of appetite (%55), fragility of nails (%54), pica (%48) andhemoroid (%13).No clinical, laboratory or statistical differences were found between pica negatıve andpica positive iron deficiency female patients.Keywords: Iron deficiency anemia, Pica, anemia, anemia symptoms
