Evaluation of determinate and indeterminate sesame (Seamum indicum L.) genotypes for yield and yield components

Abstract (EN)

The objective of this study was to investigate yield and yield components of plants with determinate and indeterminate growth habit in the F2 and F3 generation and also in the advanced sesame lines. F5 plants containing det45 gene and local varieties were hybridized. In 1996 45 F2 population derived from this hybridization were planted by using advanced lines, 3 separate yield trials were conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 2 replication. In 1997, 2 determinate and 2 indeterminate plants with the better characteristics in number of capsules of 45 segregated populations each were selected as a total of 180 plants and planted in 180 rows. Besides, a set of yield experiments formed in 1996 was planted as a main crop in the RCBD. with 2 replications. In the F2 generation, yields of the three determinate populations singled out were superior to the indeterminate populations. Whereas, in the F3 generation, 12 determinate sub populations showed better performance than indeterminate populations In both generations, determinate populations of L.T.15 and 6xMug yielded more, than the indeterminate population in the same populations. The number of capsules of 5-27/1 and T.B-11 determinant lines was higher than that of the check variety. TB-9 determinate line produced more capsules than Muganli-57 in 1996 while the same determinate line had the number of capsules close to that of the superior lines In 1997. These three determinate lines displayed good performance in seed yield in 1996 and 1997. KEYWORDS : Sesamum Indicum L., determinate, indeterminate, yield and yield components, growing habit.
