Reproduction of disadvantage: Participation of groups social work practice in Afyonkarahisar

The sociological reality indicated by the current concept of disadvantage dates back much further than current debates. The most fundamental criteria determining disadvantage include the social and economic structure of the society, employment rate, income equity, and equal opportunities. The position of disadvantaged individuals within society is objectively manifested through various life practices and the language they use. Their worlds, defined within this objective framework, tend to be continuously reproduced and mutually constructed. In other words, as disadvantage is reproduced, so is the practice of receiving assistance. Therefore, just as structures are reproduced, disadvantage is also reproduced as an objective reality, and breaking the reproduction occurring in the relationship between actor and structure seems possible only through other actions. This study was conducted using a qualitative research approach. In-depth interviews were conducted using the interview technique with 21 individuals considered disadvantaged from the perspective of social work and receiving social assistance. The data were analyzed using the MAXQDA qualitative data analysis program, resulting in seven categories identified beneath the main phenomenon. It is expected that the analysis will facilitate the identification of the structure causing the reproduction of disadvantage, understanding how and through which means this reproduction can be disrupted, and seeking solutions to this problem.
