The effect of diabetes mellitus on scabies

Objektive: This study was made to investigate the effect of diabetes mellitus (DM) on scabies. Method: The data of his study was taken from the Family Medicine Information System of the Family Medicine Unit number 61.03.001 in the Araklı district of the Trabzon province. The examination records of 6266 patients between the years 2009-2023 were included in this study. The study was designed as a case –control study which is an analytical observational method. In this study the frequency of scabies in our unit was retrospektively analyzed according to gender, age at examination, examination year and rural-urban location. And as the main topic of our study, the effect of DM on scabies was analyzed. Results: Regarding gender we found that %14(n= 3202) of female and %11,3(n=3064) of male patients were diagnosed with scabies (p= 0,001). In the analysis of patient ages during the examination of the 6266 people included in the study, the median examination year for scabies patients was 2020, IQR (Q3-Q1): 4 (2022-2018) 4, and the median for those without scabies was 2016, IQR (Q3-Q1): 6 (2019-2013). The analysis of the location of scabies patients as rural or urban was found to favor rural areas (P<0,001). We found that %9,2 of patients with DM were diagnosed with scabies and %13 of patients without type DM were diagnosed with scabies (p=0,011). We found no significant difference in the correlation analysis regarding the frequency of scabies according to the presence of DM (p=0,168). Conclusion: In our study, we determined that scabies was less common in the presence of DM. According to the data of our unit; scabies was seen to be more common for woman, younger ages and rural areas. The frequency of scabies was increasing gradually in the last years of our study. Our study shows us that scabies has been growing in importance in our region.
