Abstract (EN)

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has profoundly influenced Nigeria's political landscape, exacerbating instability, contesting official authority, and intensifying ethnic conflicts. The movement consistently poses a significant threat to national security and cohesion, intensifying volatility, particularly in the Southeast region. The organization's actions, including confrontations with security authorities, implementation of sit-at-home mandates, and purported assaults by its armed faction ESN or related "unknown gunmen," have fostered an atmosphere of fear, anxiety, and pervasive instability in the area. IPOB explicitly contests Nigeria's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as seen by the successful implementation of sit-at-home orders and demands for poll boycotts, highlighting IPOB's considerable influence and challenging the state's monopoly on authority in the Southeast. This behavior has resulted in diminished voter turnout in certain regions, compromising the credibility of electoral results and democratic engagement. The Nigerian government's forceful response and escalation have primarily centered on security measures, including military operations, the designation of IPOB as a terrorist organization, and multiple confrontations leading to casualties. This methodology faces substantial criticism for its counterproductive nature, exacerbating violence, radicalizing the movement, and intensifying human rights violations instead of tackling underlying issues. IPOB is embroiled in scandals and encounters significant criticism from multiple sources, even inside the Southeast. Critics allege that IPOB uses extremist methods and violence, deploying incendiary rhetoric and hate speech, engaging in violent enforcement, and depending on misinformation and propaganda to sway public opinion and forward its objectives. The IPOB lacks widespread support and legitimacy in the Southeast, and its violent tactics, disruptive sit-at-home orders, and election boycotts are condemned for their detrimental impact on the region's population and economy. The group's robust Igbo-centric nationalism faces criticism for its discriminatory characteristics and intolerance toward internal dissent.
