Socio demographic factors on patient anxiety in evaluation of patients going elective surgery

With this study we planned to figure out different socio-demographic factors on preoperative anxiety such as; sex, age, educational and mariatal status, number of children and income.Patients with pyschiatric and communication disorders were not included the study. ASA I-II-III 1005 patients betwen 18-65 years age admitted to anesthesiology policlinic between june 2010 and January 2011 involved this study.They have been requested to fill the questionary form which has two parts. First part was including socio-demographic questions and the second part for the anxiety level by Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information scale (APAIS).As a result of this study both surgery and anesthesia is an important stres factor for he patients. Preoperative anxiety is higher in women and higher educational status. Awareness in regional anesthesia is the biggest anxiety for the patients. Also in regional blocks patients feel the thought of ?in adequate anesthesia feeling?.As a conclusion; this study reveals that; information demand increases with being young, with higher education level and having regioanal anesthesia experience.
