Abstract (EN)
A space is not only related to its environment or the plot where it is built. It also involves the symbols of the instrument by which social power relations are constructed and sustained. In this framework, Emek İşhanı/Gökdelen (Skyscraper) occupies an important place in the symbolic transformation of Ankara and Kızılay in the 1950s. As the first skyscraper in Turkey, since its first design in 1954, Emek İşhanı has been on a course of constant interaction with the development processes that shaped the urban area of its location. The Skyscraper, which is an example of a modern building, is a product of the social and political processes of its life time and in this respect not only a physical unit but a dynamic socio-spatial entity. This thesis aims to offer a monograph of Emek İşhanı which analyzes the social transformations that are reflected in this place from the early 1950s, from its construction to the current day.
