Research of the relationship between problem internet usage and dissociative life symptoms in adolescents

In this survey, the relationship between problem internet usage and dissociative experiences of a group of adolescents was investigated. The study was carried out with a study group of 419 people studying at high schools in Hatay between 6 December 2021 and 25 February 2022 in the 2021-2022 academic year. Sociodemographic Data Form, Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale (GPIC-2) and Dissociative Experiences Scale for Adolescents (E-DES) were administered to the participants, respectively. Data collected for the research was analyzed by using the SPSS (Statistical Package for social Sciences) for Windows 25.0 program. As all subscales (Emotion regulation, Negative Results, Inadequate Self-Regulation, Online Social Interaction) and total scale scores in GPIC-2 increased, all subscales (Depersonalization / Derealization, Influence, Absorption, Dissociati and Amnesia) and total scale scores were found to increase. As a result, a positive and meaningful relationship is seen between GPIC-2 subscale Online Social Interaction and E- Dyo and its subscales; dissociative amnesia absorption between depersonalization and derealization exposure (r=0.503 p<0.05, r=0.490 p<0.05, r=0.450 p<0.05, r=0.500 p<0.05, r= 0.457 p <0.05), GPIC-2 subgroup E- Dyo and its subscales with emotion regulation ; dissociative amnesia absorption between depersonalization and derealization exposure (r=0.411 p<0.05, r=0.382 p<0.05, r=0.385 p<0.05, r=0.408 p<0.05, r=0.380 p<0.05), GPIC-2 subscale Negative and E- Dyo and its subscales; dissociative amnesia absorption between depersonalization and derealization exposure (r=0.583 p<0.05, r=0.603 p<0.05, r=0.532 p<0.05, r=0.542 p<0.05, r=0.560 p<0.05), GPIC-2 subscale Insufficient E- Dyo and its subscales with Self-Regulation ; dissociative amnesia absorption between depersonalization and derealization exposure (r=0.582 p<0.05, r=0.580 p<0.05, r=0.537 p<0.05, r=0.555 p<0.05, r=0.553 p<0.05), GPIC-2 and E- DÖ and its subscales; dissociative amnesia absorption between depersonalization and derealization exposure (r=0.661 p<0.05, r=0.655 p<0.05, r=0.606 p<0.05, r=0.636 p<0.05, r=0.622 p<0.05). When socio-demographic data of the study group were examined, it was determined that the dissociative symptoms increased as the duration of internet use increased. It was determined that the mean scores of men on both scales were higher than that of women. These results were found to be compatible with most of the other studies in the literature in terms of their results.
