Perception of parental monitoring by adolescents and examination of peer relations

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this research was to determine the relation between the perception of parental monitoring by adolescents and peer relations and to examine parental monitoring and peer relations in terms of demographical variables. Correlatinal survey model is used in this study. Research sample was consisted of 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from five different secondary schools in Bolu, educational year of 2017-2018. In total 537 students participated in this research and 285 (53,1 %) of them were male, while 252 (46,9 %) of them are female students. In this research, data was collected through Personal Information Form prepared by the researcher, Parental Monitoring Scale (Karataş, 2011) and Peer Relations Scale (Kaner, 2000). During the data analysis process, Mann-Whitney U Test was used when comparing two groups while Kruskal-Wallis H Test was used for more then two groups, and Spearman Rho Correlation Coefficient was used for the correlation analysis. According to the results of the analysis, it was found that there was a significant, negative and low level relationship between parental monitoring status and peer relationships. In this research, it was also found that the female students were more monitored, health monitoring and phone monitoring in respect to the male ones. It was determined that the more the number of siblings raised, the less likely parent monitoring gets. It was also determined that the ones with high academic achievement report more direct monitoring, while the ones with low academic achievement reported more restrictive monitoring. In addition, it was concluded that adolescents' peer relationships showed significant differences according to gender, grade level, maternal and parental education level, parental attitude and academic achievement level.
