Modal and instrumental analysis of the kanun improvisations in Erol Deran's album of kanun solo's

Kanun, used in classic Turkish music; is one of the plectrum instruments with its strong voice, wide vocal range and different timbre. When we look at the way of playing, the active movement of both hands makes it different from other instruments, compared to other plectrum instruments. Considering the positive aspects arising from this difference, it has a very special position in the improvised form of taksim. In this study, the improvisations in the album "Kanun Soloları" published in 1993 by Erol Deran, one of the Kanun artists of 20th century, were analyzed theoretically. The transition to acemkürdi, hicazkar and nihavent maqam and the transition to şehnaz maqam were examined in terms of theory and instrument technique. In addition to the information about Erol Deran's life, theoretical information about the motives analyzed, as well as information about improvisation and improvisation types are given. The notes of the analyzed improvisations are in the Appendices. The flick technique used by Deran in his improvisations, techniques such as right hand tremolo, glissando, grace note, octave performance and the way he uses the maqams, the transition and speciality tunes in his improvisations, his style and attitude performances while using the maqams has been examined in details in terms of structure, melody, rhythm and technical performance and the study was concluded. It is considered that this study will make important contributions to the researches and the studies which they do in fields studies about the Kanun instrument.
