3D design and robotic aided engineering design processes activity in science engineering and entrepreneurship applications education: Let's design the winter tire

Abstract (EN)

In this study, it is aimed to present a quality activity that teachers can use in science, engineering and entrepreneurship applications (SEEA) education and to get the opinions of students and teachers about this activity. The study was completed in a total of 16 hours as an extracurricular activity. In order to carry out the activity, the students took a 24-hour robotic coding (Arduino Ide) and 3D design (Fusion 360) course before the activity. 16 students and 3 in-service science teachers participated in the study. In the study, the students were presented with the engineering design task related to the development of winter tire. Students were asked to prepare this activity according to the engineering design process steps by using 3D design and robotic coding. The case study design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. In the study, student interviews before and after the activity, engineering process drawings of the students before and after the activity, and teacher diaries during the activity were followed. The data obtained in the study were subjected to content analysis. The data obtained from teacher diaries, student interviews and engineering process drawings were coded and these codes were expressed with frequency tables. As a result of the research, it was determined that the teachers' evaluations about the subject presented in the activity and 3D design and robotics applications were suitable for the student level. In terms of the contribution of the activity to SEEA education, it was seen that the teachers made evaluations as combining science and engineering applications, ease of controlling experimental variables with 3D design and robotics, contributing to the development of scientific process skills and contributing to creating a collaborative learning environment. It has been determined that the activity contributes to the development of the concept of engineering in students, improves understanding of the relationship between science and engineering, and provides MTS development. In addition, teachers stated that the activity provided development of coding and design skills in students. It has been observed that teachers and students about 3D design and robotic coding have stated that it provides advantages as the ease of being able to produce what you imagine and test experimental variables and simplify production processes. At the disadvantage of the activity, it was determined that the students' need for mathematics and the teachers were expressed as technological requirements and time planning. The study suggests that when science teachers develop such activities, the activity should be tested in small groups in terms of time management before practice. It also recommends for researchers to conduct studies on the effect of engineering-based activities on students' socialization and communication skills. Finally, it recommends curriculum organizers to make 3D design and robotic coding training plans for in-service and pre-service teachers and students.
