The cervical human papillomavirus prevalence of in outpatients Gazi Univercity Medical Faculty Gynecology Department and associated with demographic factors

Cervix cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the world. It is in the second place in cancer-related deaths among women. Studies showed that the basic risk factor for cervix cancer was Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Although the prevalence of types of HPV was studied in many countries, data concerning our country is very rare. In the present study, it has been attempted to determine the prevalence of types of HPV and their relationships with some risk factors. A total of 673 patients were included in the study. Cervical samples were taken from the patients for routine pap smear and HPV DNA. HPV DNA was studied in the cervical smear by the PCR method. The mean age of the patients was 40±10.9. HPV DNA was determined to be positive in the 13.5% of the cases. HPV Type 16 was positive in 5.1% of the cases, HPV Type 18 was positive in 1.5% of the cases, HPV Type 31 was positive in 0.6% of the cases, HPV Type 53 was positive in 0.9% of the cases, low risk HPV Types were positive in 3% of the cases, and other high risk HPV Types were positive in 2.5% of the cases. A significant relationship was determined among HPV DNA positivity and marital status, age of coitus, number of partners, parity and cigarette usage. Our study shows that the HPV prevalence among women is higher than expected. As a result, these findings show that Turkish women should be educated about HPV infection and vaccinations.
