Pregnants' opinions and choices for delivery mode

This cross-sectional, analytic study was made to determine pregnants' opinions and choices for delivery mode. The sample included 105 pregnant women registered in Society Health Center in Yavuzeli, Gaziantep. Self-reported data were collected via a questionnaire prepared by researcher and with Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS), with official permission, ethics committee approval and oral-written informed consent of volunteers. Data were evaluated by Chi-square analysis. P<0,05 was accepted as significant. Attendants‟ mean age and duration of marriage was 28.77±6.62 and 20.96±4.04, respectively. Of women %88.57 were housewives and %60.95 primary school graduates. Mean pregnancy duration was 2.90±1.67 weeks and %92.38 received antenatal care. %62.22 of the pregnants's last delivery mode was vaginal delivery and %60.95 knows delivery types. Majority of the pregnants (%72.38) prefer vaginal delivery. Preference of delivery mode was influenced mostly by health staff, herself, partner, family and family members. Age of marriage, previous delivery choice, delivery modes whic should and sholdn't preferred for womens, delivery modes cosen by women close to sample and people who consider taking birth influenced the delivery choice (p<0.05). As a result, it is concluded that pregnants have positive opinions about vaginal birth and many of them chose vaginal delivery, pregnants were mostly effected by health staff on the contrary of themselves and at the same time they also effected by personel, obstetric and environmental factors. Therefore in the early initiated antenatal pregnancy care and childbirth training, taking into consideration pregnant women delivery choices and individual, familial and environmental factors effecting these preferences, and supporting pregnants to use their autonomies on their choices will be an important and not to be missed opportunity.
