The change of function in traditional urfa houses : case study of Mahmut Nedim Kürkçüoğlu Mansion

The social structure, which is in change throughout history, also changes the physical environment it contains. The cities that bear the history, culture, political and economic aspects of society remain at the heart of this process of change. Since the 19 th century, our cities have been undergoing change at an uncontrolled pace couse in the middle of the 20th century, it led to a protectionist approach. Accordingly, the protection of traditional urban tissues, which enrich historical and cultural heritage, and the ability to be transferred to future generations, has gained importance. It is observed that the large part of the historical structures found in urban sit areas are houses of a traditional structure, which are examples of civil architecture. It has been observed that traditional homes will not only be sufficient to protect their physical assets, so it is necessary to refunction these structures and adopt a sustainable protection approach. Due to social changes, the invalidity of the original functions of historical structures is a general problem in Urfa, as is the case throughout our country. The study covered the concept of protection and the importance of re-function, the need to re-function traditional Urfa houses to preserve cultural and architectural heritage and ensure the transfer to future generations, and the ability to perform the task it has been charged, if only the new function is sustainable. Cultural, environmental and climatic factors that are decisive in the formation of traditional Urfa houses in this context, as well as plan types, spatial assessments and architectural features of these houses, have been refunctioned Hacı Hafiz Ahmet Balak Evi, Akçarlar Konağı, Hacıbanlar Konağı, Mehmet Bağmancı Evi, Malatyalı Halil Evi, Fuat Billurcu Evi and Mahmut Nedim Kürkçüoglu Konağı have been examined and tried to explain. Together, a 18-question survey form was developed and implemented for 100 participants to measure the impact of the refunction of the Mahmut Nedim Kürkçüoğlu Konağı on visitors. The data obtained has been analyzed in a statistical form. From the findings, new solutions were created to contribute to points considered lacking in the adaptive reuse phase of Mahmut Nedim Kürkçüoğlu Konağı.
