Abstract (EN)

This thesis consists of three essays on migration and mobility. The first chapter explores the impact of civil war and resulting refugee status on marriage patterns among Syrian refugees in Turkey. Duration analysis reveals a decline in the average marriage age and a significant shift from traditional arranged marriages to more modern forms, driven by an intergenerational power shift. This shift occurs as parental wealth and employment decline in Turkey, while Syrian youth see improved employment rates compared to the prewar situation. The second chapter examines the influence of civil conflict and forced displacement on the prevalence of physical intimate partner violence among Syrian women in Jordan. Examining the violence exposure hazard rates across different life stages, the analysis reveals that war and refugee circumstances significantly elevate the risk of intimate partner violence. This increase is primarily attributed to economic challenges, including reduced household income and job losses among refugee husbands, alongside the social isolation faced by refugee women. The third and final chapter of the research analyzes the impact of a significant rise in housing prices in Turkey from 2020 to 2023 on high school graduates' educational mobility. Utilizing regional and temporal variations in rental prices as a natural experiment, the findings show that increased rental costs significantly reduce the accessibility of university programs to non-resident students, particularly affecting those with lower academic achievements, thereby discouraging their relocation to provinces with higher accommodation costs.
