Expressing internality with the discovery of landscape in Halit Ziya's stories

This thesis will focus on the roots of modern Turkish literature in Halit Ziya's stories, especially in his stories written in 1890s through Japanese literature critic Kojin Karatani's work Origins of Modern Japanese Literature and his theory the discovery of landscape. And, it will analyse Halit Ziya similar with Karatani's reading on Japanese novelist Doppo Kunikida in 1890s. Karatani looks for the roots of modern Japanese literature by formulating it within the frame of the discovery of landscape, the discovery of interiority and inner man's intangible language. In a similar vein, this thesis will show that in Halit Ziya's short narratives, we find a similar discovery of landscape and interiority via a new language. First chapter will emphasize the links between technological advantages (such as the inventions of camera, new means of transportation) and the discovery of landscape. Second chapter will focus on the emergence of the modern man with an inner world in conjunction with this discovery. Finally, the third chapter will study new language employed by this new man.As such, this thesis will reveal the difference and exceptional position of Halit Ziya in relation to previous generation as well as his own, while pointing out the ways in which his writing influenced the expressionist narrative style of subsequent novelists.
