Abstract (EN)
There are several ways to test reading comprehension. For this reason, how totest reading comprehension has always been argued. In measuring readingcomprehension, the multiple-choice test and the cloze procedure are usuallypreferred for various reasons; the multiple-choice test is usually objective, practical, and also easy and reliable to score. It is very economical when the number of testeesis too high. However, it is generally difficult and complicated to construct a multiple-choice test. It takes too much time and effort. The cloze procedure-a gap-filling activity- is also used in measuringstudents? reading comprehension abilities. It is usually easy to construct and mark.Students are supposed to guess the correct word or find a suitable word for each gap.The aim is to help students use and develop their knowledge of the language. In this study, the multiple-choice test and the cloze procedure have beeninvestigated. The effectiveness of these test techniques as a measurement of readingcomprehension is discussed. The multiple-choice test and the cloze procedure have been compared andcorrelated with each other and also with the Dil-Mer reading exam scores that thesubjects got in the last achievement exam. A correlation analysis has been donebetween these two tests and an external measurement; that is, the Dil-Mer readingexam scores with the Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Spearman?s RankOrder Correlation. The results showed that the multiple-choice test, the cloze procedure and theDil-Mer reading exam were of medium difficulty. As the coefficients are highenough and significant, we can say that these three tests (the multiple-choice test, thecloze test and the Dil-Mer reading exam) measure students? reading comprehensionabilities in a similar way. We can say that the multiple-choice test and the Dil-Merreading exam seem somewhat distinguishes the differences among students betterthan the cloze test.As the coefficient of variation is high at the multiple-choice test, it can beinterpreted that the multiple-choice test distinguishes the differences among studentsfor reading comprehension abilities and measures the students? readingcomprehension abilities better.Key words: the multiple-choice test, the cloze test, reading comprehension
