Henry James'in kurmaca metinlerinde yersiz yurtsuzlaşan kadın gezginler

There have been plenty of studies that have analyzed the way Henry James addressed the issue of cultural conflict in his fiction, in which he mirrored the experiences of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Anglo Saxons. His works have also been analyzed much in respect of women's studies. As for this study, it claims and aims to bring these scopes together in literary analysis at the doctoral level. In our time while studies on travel and movement, and research on travel narratives are favorite topics and on the increase, this study handles the theme of cultural conflict in the context of travel to examine the view on women on the move as reflected in literature in the specified centuries and societies. It is an academic study which views the female traveler in James' fiction. The dissertation investigates how the concepts of womanhood and travel go together in two literary texts by Henry James, namely, Daisy Miller (1879) and The Wings of the Dove (1902). It highlights the image of American women visiting Europe in the specified period, and detects how change of location results in displacement. The present study claims that although the female protagonists in Daisy Miller and The Wings of the Dove, who represent the American female travelers visiting Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, are twice otherized and displaced through their culture and gender by the prevailing patriarchal norms of their host countries, they are strong enough to resist these norms. It uses Feminist, Marxist, Sociological, Psychoanalytic, and Existentialist methods of literary analysis to deal with the contribution of the culture gap and gender inequality to displacement and bring a different perspective to the way James interpreted autonomy, power, and free will for women.
