Abstract (EN)

Brake systems in vehicles are used to stop, slow down or fix the stationary vehicle in place. The kinetic energy of the vehicle is converted into heat energy by the friction effect between the brake pad and the disc or drum. A sufficient friction coefficient and wear rate are required from the brake pads in increasing temperature values and in different operating conditions. Brake pads are produced using different additives in order to perform in accordance with these features. Within the scope of the thesis study, composite brake pad samples were produced for cars with huntite mineral added, eight different mixing ratios. In the production process, the materials forming the samples were mixed in a kinetic type mixer, pressed with the hot molding method, and made ready for the experiments with the curing process as the final process. Before and after the density, friction coefficient, wear rate, friction coefficient test of the samples, disc roughness, compressive strength, internal shear strength, hardness measurements and TG-DSC mass loss tests were carried out. After the friction coefficient test, the microscopic analyzes of the brake pad samples were measured with a scanning electron microscope, and the surface roughness was measured with a three-dimensional profilometer. As a result of the measurements and experiments, the coefficient of friction was at most 0.46 in the HNT35 sample, the wear rate was at least 0.637X10-7 cm3/Nm in the HNT40 sample, and the stability value was at most 83.071 in the HNT30 sample. In the analysis of internal shear strength, compression strength, hardness, and mass loss, values similar to the studies in the literature were obtained for all samples. Microscopic SEM and profilometer examinations for the samples revealed abrasive wear marks, thermal cracks, pits and adhesive wear images on the contact surfaces. As a result, it was determined that huntite mineral-based composite brake pads produced for automobiles showed similar performance to brake pad standards and studies in the literature.
