The effect of level of dependency on depressive symptom regarding daily activities of elderly people living in nursing homes

In various researches, it has been found that dependency regarding daily activities is a significant risk factor for old age depressions. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of level of dependency on depressive symptom regarding the daily activities of elderly people who are 60 or over and live in Izmir Nursing Home and Rehabilitation and Care Center for Old People. In the study the dependency prevalence was found 25%. In this cross-sectional study, confidence interval was assessed as 95% and at least 104 old people had to be contacted.No models were selected for this study, and it was planned that the 162 people living outside of Constant Care unit in Izmir Nursing Home and Rehabilitation and Care Center for Old People were to be included in this study. 143 people were included in the data analysis. The variables are sex, age, education, marital status, income, income source, the duration of stay in the center, regular contact with relatives, daily life activities, and depressive symptom. Depressive symptom was found in more than half of these people. Regarding the daily activities, the old people are able to manage nourishment activities substantially without getting any help. More than half of the old people with depressive symptom are dependent for their basic daily activities. Dependence regarding basic daily activities is significantly high among the elderly people with depressive symptom. Regarding the secondary daily activities the old people were able to take medicine without getting help. The old people mainly need others? help for using the transportation. More than half of the old people with depressive symptom are dependent for their secondary daily activities. Dependence regarding secondary daily activities is significantly high among the elderly people with depressive symptom.Keywords: Old age, nursing home, daily activities, dependency, depressive symptom.
