Abstract (EN)

This dissertation's main objective is to look into the hydropolitical contention among Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan on the River Nile. This dissertation traces the genesis and the trending political occurrence along the Nile. It brings together related works and literature on the subject matter hydropolitics in general, and the hydropolitics of the Nile specifically. Though largely within the framework of hydrohegemony, with Egypt maintaining its historical and colonial rights on the Nile River that has always aided the hegemony it wields over the Nile despite its insignificant contribution to the flow of the Nile, this dissertation goes beyond the hydrohegemony framework to predict a possibility of a violent conflict. This is supported by a timeline data collected from the beginning of the contention till recent times which has demonstrated quite a lot of conflict and disagreement that have marked the major occurrence in the Nile region. Regionally, this dissertation looks into the politics of Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan in the Nile region. Internationally, it looks into the politics of USA, Britain and China in the region. This research has highlighted the waning power of Egypt and the developing power of Ethiopia especially since 2011 when Egypt started to struggle with its internal politics whilst Ethiopia took the advantage to build is ambitious Great Renaissance Dam which has been the recent centre of conflict in the region. it has also revealed the swinging position of Sudan which had initially partially sided with the Ethiopian state for its prospects of having electricity supply but later made a quick readjustment to side with Egypt; which has been its traditional ally. Again, this research has exposed the influence of China in recent times in African economic relations in regions like the Nile regions. It can be understood in this work that China's recent economic policies is becoming more influential than the USA – Communism struggle which involved the building of project like the Aswan High Dam. The reconciliation attempts made by the African Union and the USA among others make future cooperation doubtful. This work does not serve as a good read only to researchers on the subject matter, its projections can also help policy makers of the Nile Basin in making policies.
