Determination of yield and quality traits of advanced barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) lines under dry conditions in Central Anatolia

Abstract (EN)
This study visually assessed cultivars and advanced-stage barley lines developed for dry conditions in Ankara and Kırşehir locations for important yield and quality traits. The standard varieties such as Burakbey, Sayım-40, Sinanbey, Tarm-92, and Larende, along with 19 two-rowed advanced-stage barley lines were used in the field experiments. Observations were taken on yield and quality characteristics such as plant height, spike length, number of grains per spike, number of spikes per square meter, heading date, winter damage, grain yield, hectoliter weight, thousand-grain weight, grain size, and protein content. The genotypic performances of the advanced lines and varieties used in the study were found to be superior in Ankara's environmental conditions in terms of plant height, number of spikes per square meter, heading date, grain yield, hectoliter weight, thousand-grain weight, and protein content. As for grain count per spike, winter damage, and grain size; the genotypic performances were better in the Kırşehir location. Notably, Line 2, Line 3, Burakbey, Line 9, Sayım 40, Line 10, Line 11, Line 12, Line 15, Line 16, Line 17, and Line 19 exhibited superior genotypic performance for grain yield. Conversely, Line 1, Line 2, Line 4, Line 6, Line 7, Line 8, Sayım-40, Line 18, Line 19, and Larende were identified as advanced genotypes having high protein content. The combined analysis of variance revealed that Line 3, Line 4, Burakbey, Line 7, Line 8, Line 9, Sayım 40, Line 11, Sinanbey, Line 15, and Line 19 were high-yielding varieties/lines with high grain quality in Ankara and Kırşehir locations.
