Lexical subcategorization incompatiability of target and source languages in second language acquisition

Words in a language express events, phenomena, concepts or objects at an abstract or concrete level of meaning. İn this context words that consist of one or more phonemes also contein their own sub-meaning fields. Words can take different morphemes with these uses. These forms are in direct relation with the vocabulary of the language. The lexicon, on the other hand, includes the words belonging to the language, the types of words, the concepts of the words the phrases etc. is an abstract dictioanry. The vocabulary that individuals learning a foreign language have to learn is actually the abstract dictioanry of the target language. İn this sense, the lexical knowlegde between target and source language and the area of meaning that these words provide indicative value should be revealed. Because one of the problems in foreign language learning arises at this point. As it is known, the word encountered may be a word in an empty category in the student's native language. The language student begins to learn the target language from the first day, to be aware of such words, to use them in context, to learn syntactic words. The study investigates the effect of the words in the empty category in the mother tongue of the students who learn Turkish as a second language on the use of Turkish. People who has native English; the study, which was conducted on the participants who were homogeneously formed in the subjects of age, gender and education level, formed the sample population based on the sentences determined by the literatüre review. Participants at three language levels, who were informed about the research , were enable to notice the empty categories and identify the differences in meaning on these categories. The resulting data show the effect of the empty category on language learning. As a result of the resulting data, the empty category that should be considered in language leraning are presented and the necessary suggestions are presented.
