The influence of translation on vocabulary learning of English preparatory students

It has been a questionable matter since few decades that use of translation lost its effect in English language classrooms. Therefore, this study will research the contribution of translation to vocabulary learning in EFL, its position as a vocabulary learning strategy, and the significance of translation from the aspects of English language learners. The population of the study consists of 42 students, each of whom was selected among the preparatory classrooms of the department of English Language and Literature in Bingöl University. In the study, "pre-tests, post-tests, delayed post-tests", "vocabulary size tests" and questionnaires were applied as surveying instruments for assessing the role of translation in the vocabulary learning process. SPSS program was employed to analyse the data acquired from the study. According to the results of the study, it is understood that there is a significant relationship between use of translation and vocabulary learning, which is a fundamental part of foreign language learning, especially of reading comprehension.
