Abstract (EN)

John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) is one of the significant artists of the late Victorian era in England. Waterhouse's works particularly stand out for their interaction between mythological themes and the aesthetic and societal values of the Victorian era. The artist incorporated influences of the Pre-Raphaelite movement into his works while also developing his own individual style. Mythological figures in Waterhouse's paintings are interpreted with a modern perspective, offering criticisms of the gender roles and moral values of the time. These criticisms further enhance the overall meaning and impact of his works through the artist's figurative depictions, use of color, and composition techniques. Waterhouse's understanding of mythology during the Victorian era is based on Greek and Roman mythology, and these mythological figures are portrayed drawing inspiration from the artist's Italian origins and childhood years in Rome. Preferring to focus on the climactic points of narratives rather than avoiding the dramatic conclusions of mythological narratives, Waterhouse has particularly depicted female figures with the femme fatale image, presenting these figures as objects of sexual desire. His interest in classical mythology is based on the narratives of classical authors such as Homer, Virgil, and Ovid. These mythological narratives enriched the artist's aesthetic and thematic approaches. By expanding and transforming the understanding of Victorian-era art, Waterhouse's art made significant contributions to the history of modern art. This study enables a broader perspective on the evaluation of the artist's legacy by analyzing the impact of Waterhouse's art on the Victorian era and beyond.
