XIISUMMARYDetermination of The Prevalence of Taking Pap Smear of Obstetrician andGynecologist Specialist and General PractitionerWomen?s regularly pap smear screening is very important in terms of healthsince cervical cancer can be treated effectively if it is diagnosed early .This study has been conducted to determine the obstetricians?, gynecologists?and general practitioners? level of knowledge and prevalence of taking pap smear.For this cross sectional study, questionnaire technique was applied between4th October 2004 and 30 April 2005 to 129 obstetricians and 282 generalpractitioners who have been working in the center of Afyonkarahisar, Eskişehir,Konya and Kütahya.While analyzing the data, Kruskal-Wallis Warience analysis, Mann WhitneyU test, corelation Analysis and k-square tests have been used. p<0,05 is used formeaningfulness level.It is detected that according to the results of the research, obstetricians do nottake pap smear like the other routine detailed investigations as expected. It is noticedthat specialists have lack of sufficient qualifications in taking pap smear, havingknowledge about it and applying it. Also, it is seen that there is difference betweenspecialists? knowledge level and behaviors. That is to say, there isn?t enoughopportunity for specialits to apply their knowledge into practice. In addition, it isseen that general practitioners? knowledge level about pap smear is not at the desiredlevel.All in all, it can be concluded that more weight should be given to educationalstudies about pap smear before and after education, pap smear screening should befree of charge or at the lowest pay that is possible and village clinic must be moreactive in this topic.Key Words: Cervical cancer, pap smear, physician, screening, women health.PDF created with pdfFactory trial version www.pdffactory.com
