Abstract (EN)

Violence against women is present both in daily life and in mass media. Being one of the most significant tools of representation of violence, media has a big impact on society not only as an information platform but also as an entertainment provider. This increasing visibility of violence in media brings many questions into discussion such as how the violence is represented; usage of the language and the images; impact of violence representation on audience. In this thesis, it is tried to be understood how violence against women is being represented, normalized and justified in the media. Initially addressing to feminist critiques of violence and comprehensive violence studies carried out in communication studies, this study analyzes the symbolic annihilation concepts within the context of television which is still one of the most common referred mass media today. Also referring to feminist television criticism while interpreting how violence against women is represented, the study is finalized with a case study analysis of violence representation in a television drama called "Sen Anlat Karadeniz (You Tell it All, Black Sea)" which has had great number of audience during the period it has been streamed.
