CAPITALISM, KAYSERI?S ECONOMY AND BUSINESSMENPh.D. Dissertation Thesis Submitted to the Department of Sociology, Social SciencesInstitute, Inonu University, Malatya, Turkey: May, 2012ABSTRACT AND KEY WORDSThe subject of this dissertation is socio-economic processes which have been created by the businessmen who are the main actors of the economy in Kayseri and have provided to the main characteristics of this economy in the global capitalist system. Socio-economic processes are meant the material conditions of businessmen, their mentalities and attitudes and consequently the patterns of interactions occurring between those.Main objective of the dissertation is to discuss the socio-cultural conditions which are able to influence the financial capabilities of Kayseri?s businessmen who have been the forerunner of the recent economic development in Anatolian Region. While discussing these conditions, our aim is to attempt to establish a theoretical framework which could explain these processes in their own context under the light of the process of Capitalism.The dissertation?s methodology would be the holistic sociological approach. In this context, the qualitative research was selected. This method attempts to explain and understand the social life in its own context and depts. Consequently, the research technique was utilized according to the necessities of the Grounded Theory which is consist of the data coming from the field. The data coming from the field were analyzed by using Nvivo software. According to the results, various models were drawn.The economy and the businessmen in Kayseri have been incorporated into the Capitalist System due to those businessmen?s own attempts. These businessmen?s perceptions to the Capitalism?s characteristics have formulated and re-directed those attempts. Those characteristics are the perception of capital, the market search, international economic competition, the hierarchy of countries, state intervention to the market and vague nature of capitalist market economy. Kayseri?s own socio-economic processes and their adaption mechanisms are the elements of the context and action/interaction strategies of the paradigm?s model. These elements are the commercial accumulations, the state investments, the production fields, the perception of Capitalism and ?sittings? (meetings). The results coming from the causal, structural conditions and the context, action strategies are like following: the prudent entrepreneurs, the sectoral liquidity, the sectoral gallop, the oligopolistic market?s favors and barriers, the equalization tendency among the states and the corporatizing attempts.Keywords:Capitalism, Entrepreneur, Kayseri?s Economy, the Grounded Theory
