Measurement of radon activity in air in school buildings in Kastamonu center

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the radon activity in the primary and secondary school buildings in Kastamonu centre were measured with AlphaGUARD PQ 2000PRO radon detector produced by Genitron Instruments. The selected schools were identified according to them being old and new and there places around the city. The radon activities were measured 15,95 ± 6,68 Bq\m3 in Vali Aydın Arslan Primary School, 23,46 ± 8,76 Bq\m3 in Girls? Vocational High School (Kız Meslek Lisesinde), 58,98 ± 19,77 Bq\m3 in Gazi Paşa Primary School, 33,78 ± 11,86 Bq\m3 in Industrial Vocational High School (Endüstri Meslek Lisesinde), 11,87 ± 5,53 Bq\m3 in Ali Fuat Darende Primary School, 36,94 ± 12,85 Bq\m3 in Mehmet Akif Ersoy Primary School, 18,03 ± 7,24 Bq\m3 in Isfendiyarbey Primary School.In the frame of International Nuclear Energy Agency basic Security Standards (IAEA-BSS) the advised radon levels for houses is 200-600 Bq/m3. According to the Turkish Nuclear Energy Institution?s (TAEK) Radiation Security Regulation the limit value permitted for houses is 400 Bq/m3, 1000 Bq/m3 for workplaces (TAEK 2009). The average radon activities measured in schools were under the value of the permitted International and Turkish standards.
