Abstract (EN)

Cr4+:YAG and Cr2+:ZnSe are solid-state saturable absorbers which can be used forpassive Q switching of lasers operating near 1000 and 1500 nm, respectively. In the firstpart of the thesis, we employed experimental and numerical techniques to analyze thesaturation characteristics of Cr2+:ZnSe. In particular, ground-state and excited-stateabsorption cross sections, single-pass-loss, and lifetime of the Cr2+: ZnSe saturableabsorber were determined at the wavelengths of 1570 and 1800 nm. The results werecompared with previously reported values in the literature. In the second part of thethesis, the application of the Cr4+:YAG saturable absorbers in the passive Q switching ofNd:YVO4 and a Nd:YAG lasers was experimentally investigated. This resulted in thegeneration of nanosecond laser pulses at the wavelength of 1064nm. In the particularcase of the Nd:YVO4 laser, we developed a technique to adjust and control the pulserepetition rate of the passively Q-switched laser with an intracavity lens. Experimentaldata showing the performance as a function of the pump power and resonatorconfiguration were obtained. Finally, the emission cross section of Nd:YVO4 crystal at1064 nm was determined from the repetition rate data.
