Abstract (EN)
THE USE OF XENO-OSTEOINDUCTIVE BONE PROTEIN EXTRACT IN THETREATMENT OF CAVITARY BONE DEFECTSDr. Murat SongürABSTRACTObjective: For the treatment of cavitary bone defects, efficacy of equine derived bone proteinextract as an osteoinductive agent, composed of high amount of type I collagen and otherbone matrix proteins, is aimed to be compared with human derived demineralized bone matrixMaterials and Methods: Rabbit distal femoral condyles were used as the cavitary bonedefect model. A defect of 6 mm. diameter and 12-15 mm. depth was created by lateralapproach. 18 rabbits were divided into 3 consecutive groups. Group I (n=6) was left empty ascontrol while group II (n=6) was filled with 0,4 cc. demineralized bone matrix and group III(n=6) received 20 mg. Equine derived bone protein extract (Colloss-E). At the end of 6thweek defects were evaluated both histologically and radiologically. Results: Since defect is cavitary, any radiologic difference were found by plain x-ray.Histopathologic evaluation revealed that, from quality of unions aspect, bovine bone proteinextract demonstrated better results than both control group and demineralized bone matrixgroup and these results were found to be statistically significant. From graft incorporation andnew bone formation aspect, similarly bone protein extract group demonstrated higher scoresthan demineralized bone matrix group. Conclusion: Results acheived were concordant with previously reported results concerningosteoinductive properties of bone protein extracts. It is concluded that equine derived boneprotein extract was effective in treatment of cavitary bone defects.
