Prognostic significance of CD133 and Ki-67 in the stomach cancer of patient treated with chemoradiotherapy

Abstract (EN)
Gastric cancer is one of the most aggressive malignancies, with an extremely poor prognosis, and is the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Newer and more aggressive treatments are needed to be applied due to 20% ratios of 5 years-survival in the gastric cancer. With the studies performed prognosis factors are researched to discover groups with resistance to treatment and low survival ratios. These groups are thought to benefit more from these aggressive treatments. One of these new prognosis factors is CD133. CD133 is one of the body surface proteins which is an indicator of stem cells. Self renewal and potential of proliferation, cancer stem cells take an important place in the cancer biology. Likewise, these cells are responsible from tumor recurrence and metastases after successful treatments.In this study, prognostic factors, prognostic importance of CD133 and Ki-67 and correlation between CD133 and Ki-67 were examined and overall and disease free survival in 50 gastric cancer cases who took chemoradiation therapy in Radiation Oncology Department of Faculty of Medicine, Gazi University.Cases with 22 months median tracking period had 2 years overall survival ratio of 49% and 2 years disease free survival ratio of 48%. For the gastric cancer, prognostic importance was shown for stage, location of tumor, ratio of lymph nodes and type of resection whereas prognostic importance was not shown for sex, age, surgerical type, classification of Bormann and Lauren and resection of lymph nodes lower than 15. Through multivariate analyses, diameter of tumor and ratio of lymph nodes were shown to be independent prognostic factors.Overall survival ratios with positive CD133 cases were found to be better compared to negative cases and through univariate and multivariate analyses, CD133 was shown to be independent prognostic factor. However, Ki-67 index was not found to be prognostic importance. Nonetheless, middle positive correlation was come up with between CD133 and Ki-67.As a result, with this study CD133 was pointed as a prognostic factor. By technological improvements new molecular indicators are to be available in routine. Therefore, prognosis of patients are to be estimated beforehand and survivals are ensured to increase with aggressive treatments.
