Perception and attitude of local people towards urban transformation applications: Kuzeykent Neighborhood (Kastamonu) example

This study examines the opinions and expectations of the local residents regarding urban transformation practices in the Kuzeykent neighborhood of Kastamonu. Urban transformation is carried out with the aim of revitalizing the city's outdated areas. In Kuzeykent, urban transformation projects have been implemented through the demolition of old and deteriorated buildings and the construction of new, solid, and multi-story buildings. The study aims to identify the effects of these projects on the local residents and their expectations. A survey was conducted with 446 participants. The collected data consists of opinions about the living environment and urban transformation. Independent t-tests and one-way ANOVA were applied to the survey data. These analyses revealed the public's perspectives on urban transformation and were examined in terms of the current status planning for the study area. The study found that many participants hold negative views about urban transformation due to reasons such as harm to neighborhood relationships, price increases, and the reduction of natural areas. It is important to provide both economic and social new settlement opportunities to the local residents during the project implementations. In this context, creating common spaces will enhance and strengthen social interactions. The most significant finding of the study is that residents should be actively involved in the process. The study also offers recommendations by discussing the physical, social, cultural, and legal aspects of the urban transformation projects specific to the Kuzeykent neighborhood. It is expected that this study will contribute to and guide future research.
