Evaluation of the urban space in the context of livability; Gaziantep, Şahinbey example

The aim of this research is to examine the level of livability at the neighborhood level in Gaziantep Province, Şahinbey District. Şahinbey, about 950 thousand people, is the largest district of Gaziantep and third largest district in Turkey. An important part of the historical Gaziantep city fabric is in Şahinbey district. The district was the region that received the most immigration during the industrialization process of Gaziantep. Therefore, it is among the places where the significant effects of unplanned urbanization problems from past to present have been observed. Today, there are important differences between neighborhoods in terms of livability. This study is included in the descriptive research group in terms of research design. Within the scope of Şahinbey district, situation determination and analysis are carried out in the context of livability at the neighborhood level. The Research Method is developed within the framework of quantitative approach. In this framework, it is based on the comparative analysis of some indicators developed in the context of livability. These indicators are developed depending on density, public space quality, accessibility, diversity and accessibility criteria. The method design of the research consists of two stages. In the first phase, the quantitative data obtained through the development plan and maps are examined in detail at the neighborhood level. In the second stage, these data are evaluated with a scoring approach and transferred on cognitive maps. The basic materials of the study consist of quantitative data obtained from Şahinbey District Digital Plan. Besides, the zoning plan, baseline map and Spatial Plans Construction Regulation were used as other materials. At the end of the research, Şahinbey as a whole district is classified by creating a neighborhood level livability index. Findings show that there are important differences between the eastern and western districts of the city. While presenting an analytical study for new planning and public investments to be made, the study also develops a quantitative and applicable method for different settlements.
