A study of pedesti̇an area as part of urban desing: Malatya Kanal Boyu Street model

With the rapid development of cities, using motor vehicles had increased environmental quality had deteriorated, population density and noise pollution had increased. These consequences led to decrease in life quality. For maintaining the vitality of city centres and improving the life quality the necessity of pedestrian areas had increased. In this perspective, in pedestrian areas in a city to perform some activities like movement, speed, changing direction, walking, stopping, communicating with other users, perceiving environment or to be perceived by the environment, sitting, relaxing, meeting, wandering it is highlighted that suitable adjustments have to be done. İn this thesis, firstly, the concepts of "pedestrian", pedestrianization", the pedestrian zone" and "public areas" are examined and then the importance of pedestrianization in cities is underlined. Desing, plans, causes and consequences of pedestrianization approaches that have been successful in the World and turkey are examined and some examples are provided. In this context, the potential of the area as a pedestrian zone has been evaluated by conducting fieldwork on Kanal Boyu Street and the usage and physical changes of the area from past to present have been examined. The expectations, wishes, problems and tendencies of the users of the Street have been discussed with observation and survey method. All the results have been evaluated and desing proposals involving this Street and its surroundings which are important for Malatya have been presented.
