Abstract (EN)

Prematurity is described as, ending of gestation before completing 37 weeks or259 days, by the World Health Organization. The risk of prematurity, which is the maincause of mortality and morbidity, among newborn would be decreased by early andadequate prenatal care of all women especially in the high risk group. The aim of the case-control study is to determine the factors effectingprematurity, in Konak Health District. Population of the study is number of all births in2005 in Konak Health District. All births between 01.06.2005 and 30.11.2005 in KonakHealth District are the case group(n=210).In the same health centre?s region, being born in the same month and terminfants are chosen for control group(n=210). 176(%83.8) in the case group and203(%96.7) infants parents have been reached, in this study. There is no significant difference between the infants gender in case and controlgroups. Also there is no significant difference between case and control group parents?social security and perceived-economic status.By univariate analysis, smoking habit during pregnancy(p=0.041), history ofwithin 24 hours before delivery(p=0.002), twin and triplet pregnancy(p=0.000), liftingheavy objects in last 24 hours(P=0.024), presence of oligo-polihidramniozis(p=0.001),excessive contractions of uterus(p=0.026), early membrane rupture(p=0.000),intrauterine growth retardation(p=0.000), measurements during prenatalobservations(p=0.037), number of prenatal observations(p=0.037) are risk factors forprematurity. The variables that were statistically significant by univariate analysiswere includedin a multivariate analysis. Logistic regression analysis show that mother?s education, twinor triplet pregnancy in the current pregnancy, placenta previa, early membrane rupture, intrauterine growth retardation, unsufficient weight gains are the main risk factors forprematurity.Key word: Prematurity, risk factor.iv
