Abstract (EN)

Investigation of Bone Metabolism in Dogs with Leishmaniasis In the present study, it was aimed to determine bone metabolism related changes in dogs with leishmaniasis such as vitamin D, calcium, phosphate and ALP levels then compared to healthy ones. Sera of 20 male dogs with leishmaniasis and 20 healthy male dogs were used; the seropositivity of all cases was previously tested by IFAT. Serum phosphorus and calcium levels were measured by colorimetric methods, ALP levels were measured at spectrophotometer with using a commercial kit and 25-OHD3 levels was measured with an ELISA kit. The mean serum calcium levels in dogs with and without Leishmania infection were found as 3,38 mg/100 ml and 8 mg/100 ml, respectively. The difference between two groups was statistically significant (p:0,000). Additionally, Phosphorus levels (average) were 3,01 mg/100 ml and 2,19 mg/100 ml, respectively. This difference was also statistically significant (p:0,000). Among dogs with leishmaniasis the average serum 25- OH-D3 level was measured as 51,89 nmol/L and was measured as 70,01 nmol/L among healthy dogs. Statistically, there was no significant difference between two groups in serum 25-OH-D3 levels (0,252). The ALP levels among infected and non-infected dogs serum were measured as137,1 U/L and 104,5 U/L, respectively. Statistically, there was a significant difference between two groups (p:0,026). It can be concluded that leishmaniasis may have negative effects on bone metabolism among dogs according to our findings: the increase in serum ALP levels, hypocalcaemia and hypophosphatemia.
