Examination of social media addiction and emotion regulation skills in high school students according to the personal characteristics and various variables

Abstract (EN)

This research's objective is to examine social media addiction and emotion regulation skills of the high school students according to their personality chracteictics and several factors. The research universe was created by students studying in secondary schools in Kocaeli province. The research sample was created with 428 students studying in secondary schools in Izmit District. The data of the study were obtained by Demographic Information Form, Short Form of Adolescent Social Media Addiction Scale, Emotion Editing Scale for Adolescents and Five Factor Personality Scale. The study included a relational screening model, which is one of the quantitative research methods. According to the normality analysis results conducted to determine which analysis method the data will be analyzed, non-parametric tests were used in data analysis. According to the study, the majority of participants were not addicted to social media. There was a significant difference between the age of the students participating in the study and their social media addiction, while no differences were detected in other demographic characteristics. When students' emotion editing skills were examined, it was found that they tend to regulate the most intrinsic functional emotions. According to the research, there was a significant difference between the genders of the participants and the internal non-functional emotion editing and external emotion editing skills, which are sub-dimensions of emotion editing skills. It was found that there was a significant difference between the age of the participants and the ability to regulate external non-functional emotions. Participants were found to have a significant difference between the number of sibling sequences and their intrinsic non-functional emotion editing and external functional emotion editing skills. It has been determined that there is no difference in meaning between the perceived economic situation and the ability of the participants to regulate emotions. Participants were found to have a significant difference between their academic achievement levels and their internal functional emotion editing skills. There has been no significant difference between academic achievement levels and other sub-dimensions. It was found that there was a significant difference between the educational status of the mothers of the participants and the external functional emotion editing skills. It was found that there was a significant difference between the educational status of the participants and the internal functional emotion editing skills. As a result of the analysis to determine whether the personality characteristics of the participants differ depending on their social media addiction, it has been found that there is a significant difference between soft ness, self-control, neuralism and openness subsizes and social media addiction situations. In addition, there was no significant difference between the subsize of extrovertism and the state of social media addiction. As a result of the analysis to determine the relationship between the personality characteristics of the participants in social media addiction, there is a negative, very low and pointless, negative with soft ness, negative, low and meaningful with self-control, positive with neurism, low and meaningful, and negative, very low and meaningful relationship with Experience Openness. As a result of the analysis conducted with the aim of determining the difference between the personality characteristics of the participants and the method of editing the emotion they used the most, it was found that Extrovertism, Soft Ness, Self-control and Neurism differ significantly according to the emotion editing methods used most often.
