Investigation of the relationship between empathy tendency levels and sportsmanship behaviors of high school students

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between empathic tendency levels and sportsmanship behaviors of high school students studying in central schools affiliated to Malatya Provincial Directorate of National Education. The population of the study consisted of high school students studying in central schools affiliated to the Provincial Directorate of National Education, and the sample group of the study consisted of 780 high school students, 439 female students and 341 male students, and these students voluntarily participated in the study. In our research, the questionnaire method was used as a data collection tool. The questionnaire consists of three sections and 47 questions in total. In the first section, there are 7 statements about demographic variables. In the second part, "Sportsmanship Behavior Scale" consisting of 20 statements and in the third part, "Empathic Tendency Scale" consisting of 20 statements were used. Reliability analysis of the scales was done by calculating Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient. Descriptive statistics including arithmetic mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentage distributions were presented to provide an idea about demographic information and other group questions. Correlation (Pearson) test was applied to determine the levels of Empathic Tendency and Sportsmanship Behavior of High School Students. In order to determine the relationship between the sub-dimensions of Empathic Tendency and Sportsmanship Behavior levels with some demographic variables, Skewness and Kurtosis tests were examined in the first place, and according to the test results, Independent Sample T (Independent Sample T) test was applied in the comparison of independent paired groups in the analysis of data that meet the normality conditions. The results were evaluated at 95% confidence interval and significance at p<0.05 level. Statistics package program was used in the evaluation of the data. According to the results of our study, according to the answers received from the sportsmanship behavior scale, statistically significant differences were found between the groups in some sub-dimensions and general scores, gender, class, course status and sports participation status; while statistically significant differences were not found between the groups in the number of siblings, mother education level, father education level. Again, as a result of the empathic tendency scale of our study, while statistically significant differences were found between the groups in class and course status; no statistically significant differences were found between the groups in gender, number of siblings, mother's education level, father's education level and sports participation status.
