Abstract (EN)
Architectural thought, which initially emerged from an interest in classical antiquity, has been continually reinterpreted through shifting social, technological, ideological, and economic contexts. In Turkey, beginning with the Early Republican period, architecture became closely tied to the construction of national identity and functioned as an important instrument of cultural representation. Over time, debates on modernism, ideology, identity, and globalization contributed to the development of a distinctive intellectual framework within Turkish architectural discourse. Within this environment, Bülent Özer (1933–2016) appeared as a multifaceted cultural figure whose academic work and editorial activities significantly influenced the shaping of architectural thought in Turkey. His interdisciplinary approach—reflected in his articles, doctoral dissertation, and lecture notes—not only introduced an architectural history perspective but also broadened the intellectual boundaries of the field. This thesis examines Özer's theoretical, pedagogical, publishing, and cultural contributions and evaluates the continuing relevance of his intellectual legacy today.
