Abstract (EN)

In this study, Turkey's bringing of the Straits issue to the agenda of international meetings is discussed, taking into account the developments in the world between 1933 and 1936, before the signing of the Montreux Straits Convention dated 20 July 1936. First of all, the historical and strategic location of the Straits was mentioned, and after the legal process that emerged with the treaties was discussed, the developments that continued until 1936 were taken into account. Afterwards, the foreign policy and diplomatic activities of the newly established Republic of Turkey since the 1920s were discussed and the political activities extending to the Straits Convention were examined. After examining the specified historical and political process, the news published in the Turkish Press about the process leading to the Montreux Straits Convention were scanned in the light of newspapers between 1933 and 1936, through the digital newspaper archive opened by Istanbul University, and the reflections of the contract in the press were examined. The newspapers scanned were determined as Cumhuriyet, Tan, Akşam, Son Posta, Vakit and Ulus newspapers. First, newspapers were scanned, taking into account the dates when the Straits came to the agenda again in the 1930s and international solution mechanisms began to form, and the process up to July 20, 1936 was discussed.
