Abstract (EN)
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis as a marker of oxidative stress in patients with nasal polyps and the effects of smoking on homeostasis parameters in patients with nasal polyps. Material and Method: Forty patients with nasal polyps and 36 healthy volunteers were included in our study. The patient group was divided into 2 groups as 20 smokers and 20 non-smokers. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis parameters in serum samples of all participants were analyzed with the new automatic measurement method developed by Erel and Neşelioğlu and compared between groups. Findings: Each parameter related to thiol/disulfide homeostasis native thiol (SH), total thiol (ToSH), disulfide (SS), SS/SH%, SH/ToSH% and SS/ToSH% were evaluated separately. Significant differences were found between the groups in terms of markers of thiol-disulfide balance. Total Thiol (ToSH) µmol/L (p=0.005; p<0.01), Native Thiol (SH) µmol/L (p=0.001; p<0.01) and SH/ToSH % levels in patients with nasal polyps were in the control group. Disulfide (SS) (p=0.001; p<0.01), SS/NT % (p=0.001; p<0.01) and SS/ToSH % levels were significantly higher than the control group. found. (p=0.001; p<0.01) Results: Thiol/disulfide homeostasis has been shown to shift toward disulfide formation as a result of native thiol oxidation in patients with nasal polyps. Thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters can be used as new markers of oxidative stress in nasal polyp. Larger clinical studies and observations are needed to find out how effective the addition of antioxidant therapy can be in the treatment of nasal polyps, whether it will change treatment modalities, and whether it can break the absolute superiority of surgery. Keywords: Nasal polyp, Oxidative stress, Thiol/disulfide homeostasis
