The factors affecting survival of patients with non metastatic operated carcinoma

The aim of the study is to determine the factors affecting survival of patients with non-metastatic, operated gastric carcinoma in order to provide clinicians took rational decisions about treatment and disease management. The records of 200 patients with non-metastatic operated gastric carcinoma, who was followed at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Oncology Department between 1998 and 2011, were analyzed retrospectively. The relationship between survival and gender; age; performance status; diameter, localization and histolopathology of tumor; serosa, surgical border, perineural and lenfovascular invasion; TNM, Bourmann and Lauren classification; lymph node dissection; metastatic lymph node index; taking radiotherapy . The universe of the study, which is descriptive and cross-sectional, consists of patients with non-metastatic operated gastric carcinoma followed at Oncology department between 1998 ? 2011. The data of 230 patients were reached in the scope of the study. Since 30 patients lost to follow-up, the study was completed with 200 patients? records. It?s aimed to determine relationship between survival and gender; age; performance status; diameter, localization and histolopathology of tumor; serosa, surgical border, perineural and lenfovascular invasion; TNM, Bourmann and Lauren classification; lymph node dissection; metastatic lymph node index; taking chemoradiotherapy . As a result of this study, performance status, status of being T4 and N3, metastatic lymph node index were found as independent risk factors affecting survival. Tumors showing good-intermediate differentiation had statistically significant longer survival. Lymphovascular invasion and the number of metastatic lymph node had significant relationship and patients having lymphovascular invasion had a shorter survival. Also most of the patients included in this study had total/subtotal gastrectomy+D2 dissection and had a significantly longer survival than the patients having other type of surgical approach.
